What happens when the body loses movement options?
Recently, during a thoracic mobility assessment, we observed a client who rotated much more freely to the right than to the left. What followed was a fascinating example of how breathing, mobility, and compensation patterns interact.
At our studio, every session begins with an assessment.
This week, we included an assessment of thoracic mobility, specifically thoracic rotation. The thoracic spine (the area of the spine attached to the rib cage) plays an important role in breathing, posture, and movement.
When we assessed our client, one thing became immediately apparent: she rotated much more freely to the right than to the left.

At first glance, this may not seem significant. However, the body is remarkably good at adapting. When movement becomes limited in one area, it often develops compensatory strategies elsewhere.
In her case, she held a significant amount of rotation toward her right side. Her head appeared relatively centered, but her body was subtly leaning right. This is a common example of compensation. The body finds a way to function, even when movement options become limited.
Our first intervention was simple.
We used a yoga strap around the rib cage to encourage 3-dimensional breathing. Rather than focusing on posture, we focused on creating awareness of movement throughout the rib cage and thorax.
Almost immediately, subtle changes began to appear.

As the rib cage expanded more evenly, her body began to organize itself differently. We then incorporated thoracic mobility exercises designed to gently decompress the thorax and improve movement options. In our Integrative Movement System we refer them to Thoracic Openers.
By image 3 bottom left there is a significant change. We used the opener to her left side . And to complete the sequence we also opened the right side .
As you move through the photos, notice what happens.
The changes are not dramatic or forced. We are not asking our client to “stand up straight.” Instead, we are creating conditions that allow her body to find a more balanced position on its own.
By the final image, you can see improved organization through the torso, a reduction in the right-sided compression pattern, and a more balanced overall posture. What makes these changes particularly interesting is that the assessment, breathing work, and Thoracic Openers took approximately 15 minutes. The remainder of the session was spent on the Reformer, Cadillac, and Chair, where these new movement options could be challenged, reinforced, and integrated into more complex movement patterns.
The goal is not perfect symmetry. Human bodies are naturally asymmetrical.
The goal is to restore options.
When the body has access to more movement options, it often relies less on compensatory patterns. Breathing becomes easier, movement becomes more efficient, and posture often improves as a natural by-product rather than as something we consciously force.

Why do compensatory patterns develop in the first place?
The body is designed to adapt and find the path of least resistance
An injury, a fall, surgery, repetitive work tasks, sport-specific training, or even prolonged periods of stress can change how we move and how we organize ourselves against gravity.
These adaptations are not inherently bad. In fact, they are often the reason we are able to continue functioning.
The challenge arises when a temporary adaptation becomes a long-term strategy.
Over time, the body may lose movement options and begin relying on the same compensatory patterns repeatedly. This can lead to changes in the muscular and skeletal systems as the body continually organizes itself around the same movement strategy.
Our goal is to help the body regain options, improve efficiency, and reduce the need for compensation whenever possible.
